The Ozone is a gas present in our atmosphere.

Being one of the lighter gasses, it effectively floats into the upper atmosphere and forms a layer. This layer, as we understand it, acts as a "sunscreen" filtering out large amount of harmful radiation.

It is believed that the Ozone Layer once completely covered the Earth. It is believed that this layer is thinner than it used to be, and there are holes in places.

Anecdotally, I seem to remember (in the 1960's I think) scientists asking NASA to burn a hole in the layer (somewhere near Antartica) so that they could get clearer observations out in space.
